British motorists leaving expensive possessions behind might not be able to claim on their car insurance if thieves take them, new research has revealed.
The study by Saga Motor Insurance reports that over eight million car owners including 22% of drivers over 50 are leaving portable gadgets worth more than £200 in their cars. What most of them fail to realise is that most car insurance premiums only cover £100-£200 of personal possessions.
Technology hungry Brits are eager to take their portable communication equipment everywhere with 42% carrying mobiles, 12% take DVD players and iPods, 8% have laptops and 4% have speed camera detectors.
Andrew Goodsell, Executive Chairman, Saga Group, said: "The trend for more in-car technology has led to a significant increase in the total value of a vehicle's contents.
"The over 50s do tend to take more care and lock valuables out of sight or remove them from the car altogether. But I would urge people to check their policies to see how much their insurers would cover if they became victims of theft."
