Motorists Missing Out On Savings

Many car owners are unaware of simple means to reduce their motoring costs, a survey has found.

According to breakdown firm Autonational Rescue, an overwhelming majority (93%) of drivers have never thought about filling up petrol at regular intervals instead of weighing down their car with a heavy fuel tank.

Of nearly 1,000 people surveyed just 15% make savings through supermarket fuel vouchers, while only 17% search for the cheapest filling station.

Just a fifth of drivers look for shortcuts to reduce the distance travelled on journeys, while only around one-third think basic vehicle maintenance such as regular checks of car tyre pressure is important.

Autonational Rescue marketing manager Ronan Hart said: "There are good ways to save on motoring costs and when it comes to tyres, making sure you have the right pressures is very important."

He added that the extra fuel cost of running on under-inflated tyres could be around 5% per journey, while tyres will wear out faster if the pressure is wrong.

Mr Hart continued: "Planning a shorter journey is of course essential and could knock a lot off fuel bills."
