Black Cars Linked To Fast Driving

Drivers of black-coloured cars are more likely to have speeding convictions, which may have an impact on their car insurance premiums.

One in four (25.4%) black-vehicle owners have points on their licences for speeding, according to a poll, which also found that they are 9% more likely to have committed speeding offences than the average motorist.

The second "speediest" colour is grey, with 25.1% of owners having speeding convictions, followed by silver, blue and brown, according to insurer elephant.co.uk.

Those least likely to have been caught exceeding speed limit are drivers of purple-coloured cars, while owners of yellow, white and red cars also have few convictions.

The group examined the cars on their books to try to find out why drivers of black and grey vehicles are more likely to speed. Managing director Brian Martin said: "We found it didn't necessarily correlate that black and grey cars would have bigger engines, so evidently for drivers of these coloured cars, the temptation to break the speed limit is simply too great whatever their engine size."
