More than 1 million drivers in the UK are uninsured, though that number is significantly lower compared to just five years ago. Still, the bevy of uninsured motorists cause a huge strain on insured drivers and the economy as a whole.

Uninsured Behind the Wheel
Though the number of uninsured drivers in the UK has been falling over the last few years, there are still millions on the road.

Driving Uninsured Is Socially Unacceptable
Nearly all adults agree that driving uninsured is wrong. Surprisingly, more adults are in agreement about uninsured drivers than are about other various issues.

96% It’s socially unacceptable to drive an uninsured vehicle.
83% It’s socially unacceptable not to pay for council tax.
81% It’s socially unacceptable not to tax your vehicle.
51% It’s socially unacceptable to download illegal music.


Younger People More Likely to Drive Uninsured
One in 10 people under 25 years old admit to driving their own car without insurance. The number jumps to nearly 1 in 4 people under 25 who’ve driven someone else’s vehicle without insurance.

Colliding With Insured Drivers
Not only are uninsured drivers prevalent, they’re often in accidents with insured drivers.

>> 1 in 10 drivers have been involved in a collision with a driver who was uninsured.
>> 25% of drivers in a crash with an uninsured driver said they or their passengers had been hurt.


The Cost of the Uninsured
All uninsured drivers are burdening the economy and injuring — sometimes fatally — people every year.

>> Uninsured motorists kill 160 people and injure 23,000 every year.
>> Uninsured motorists cost the economy over £500m every year.
>> Uninsured motorists add £30 to the average motorist’s annual insurance premium.

Younger Uninsured Drivers Down Dramatically
Young people are more likely to drive without insurance, but in just a few years, the number has decreased by half.

17-20 Year Olds Who Are Uninsured
2008 About 250,000
2012 About 125,000


Number of Uninsured Falls Over Five Years
Across all age groups, since 2005 the number of uninsured drivers has fallen sharply, thanks in part to continuous enforcement.

London and Merseyside areas — where 1 in 10 drivers is uninsured — top the list of police force areas with the highest proportion of uninsured vehicles on the road.
