The gear you need for winter biking

Motorbike on roadWith summer over and the colder, darker, wetter days of autumn and winter creeping in, hitting the roads on two wheels can be a chilly experience. We take a look at the must-have clothing to keep you from freezing on your bike.

Winter is set to come early this year and with autumn already throwing up gale force winds and torrential rain, it’s not too early to start preparing.

Remi Gazalet, experienced biker and founder of TwistyRide.com says: “The drop in temperature is made worse by the wind and rain, so bikers must make sure they have the right kit now.”

“There is nothing worse than losing feeling in your fingers during the daily commute, or getting to your destination absolutely soaked to the bone, but there are plenty of motorbike clothing options to keep out the weather.

“Gloves are vital, and your winter kit will see you through mountain journeys and colder climes at other times of the year as well.”

So wearing the correct kit is absolutely vital to ensure bikers stay warm, dry and safe, but with thousands of items to choose from, selecting the must-haves can be tricky. Here’s what to consider.

Thermals

They may not be the sexiest of clothing, but thermals are a great way to keep warm. Layers are the key, and a breathable, natural fibre inner covering will help to keep out even the worst of chills.

Invest in a long-sleeve jumper and trousers for under your motorbike gear and you will stave off the shivers.

Accessories

Neck warmers, waterproof socks, balaclavas and winter gloves are the added extras that bikers should seriously consider.

Even on short journeys, the cold and damp can creep in through the gaps between your kit, so make sure every inch of skin is properly covered.

Heated grips are a bit of a luxury for many bikers but if you suffer from poor circulation the last thing you want is for your fingers to stop working while trying to change gear or brake.

Investing in heated grips is a must for those who continue to brave the bad weather throughout autumn and winter.

Textiles vs. leathers

Textiles are generally the preferred option for winter kit, as they are far better at keeping in warmth and keeping out the rain.

Today’s textile motorbike jackets and trousers offer almost as much crash protection as leathers and are often more versatile and practical, whatever the weather.

The best textile motorbike clothing is made of Gore-Tex, a waterproof and breathable material that is hardwearing.

Look out for clothing with quilted, removable liners so that if autumn throws up a drier, milder day you won’t overheat.

Staying safe

Autumn and winter also mean darker days, so for those riding at all hours anything that makes you more visible is a bonus. High-vis jackets, vests or belts can make bikers more obvious to fellow road users and aid safety.
