People who have lost their homes and businesses during the rioting that swept across towns and cities in England have been promised compensation from the Government.

Prime Minister David Cameron said payouts would be made available under the Riot Damages Act.

He said the funding pot would be underwritten by the Government to enable the police to meet the cost of any legitimate claims, while the application period will be extended from 14 to 42 days.

The Association of British Insurers said its members expect to be paying out in excess of £200 million to customers with appropriate policies including home insurance.

While Mr Cameron also announced the establishment of a £20 million "high street support scheme" to help affected businesses, who may also benefit from tax breaks and deferred payments.
