A good home insurance policy remains critical for all householders after new figures suggested there was a 14% rise in the number of burglaries last year.
The statistics compiled by the British Crime Survey, which relies on interviews with people about their experiences instead of just what they report to police, show that bicycle thefts were also up 12%.
However, the number of domestic burglaries and other burglaries actually recorded by police were both down by 7%.
Overall, household crime showed no change in the British Crime Survey, along with the levels of violent crime and personal crimes. And the risk of being a victim of crime remained about the same as the previous year at 21.4%, the BCS revealed.
The BCS figures showed the proportion of adults with a high level of worry about burglary (10%) and violent crime (13%) remained the same in 2010. The figures also revealed that concerns over vehicle crime remained at 10%, although obtaining decent car insurance cover should ease those worries.
However, the official figures recorded by police suggest that road users may have less to worry about as there was a 12% fall in offences against vehicles.
