Research by Churchill Home Insurance has revealed couples feel starting a family and buying a home are the most important dreams to achieve in the current financial climate.

One in four adults said they are now having to prioritise between life goals like marriage, children and getting on the property ladder due to money worries.

But 43 per cent of couples who took part in the nationwide survey said having children was their most important goal to achieve first and a third said buying a property was their main priority.

The lowest priority for couples was getting married as only 22 per cent of people said they would do this first.

Matt Owen, from Churchill Home Insurance, said: "It appears that having a big wedding is now seen as a 'nice to have', but starting their own family is what's really important for many couples."
