Many Britons are going to great lengths to protect their homes from burglars while they're away, research has claimed.
The study showed that more than 2.5 million people hope to deter burglars by leaving a food bowl out for a pretend pet dog.
Some 10 per cent of those polled by esure home insurance ask neighbours to shift their car for them while away in a bid to create the impression that they are around as normal.
Neighbours are also called upon by a 29 per cent of householders, who ask them to pop in and open and close their curtains for them.
Another 10 per cent throw caution to the wind with regard to their electricity bill and leave the TV on while they're out.
Nikki Sellers, head of home insurance at esure, said: "By taking a few precautions, such as investing in a timer for lights and cancelling deliveries, householders can avoid a potentially distressing experience and focus instead on enjoying their summer holiday."
