Homeowners have been warned to make sure they take the necessary safety precautions if they are planning to have personal firework displays.

The AA's Home Emergency Response Service has warned that 48 per centĀ of firework injuries happen at family or private parties.

Campaigners might find it easier to demonstrate the dangers this year after Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli's bathroom caught fire after a firework was lit indoors.

The AA has drawn attention to the fact that five to 12-year-olds are at the highest risk of being injured by fireworks, and it has issued reminders to parents about teaching firework safety.

A few guidelines have also been released by the insurer, warning against lighting fireworks indoors - even if they are being directed out of windows - or close to the house.

Tom Stringer, Head of AA Home Emergency Response, said: "Safety at home on bonfire night is about knowing how to handle fireworks yourself, but also about making sure the rest of your family understand the dangers and how to minimise them."
