Legal expenses cover is an optional extra when you come to buy home insurance. So what does it offer?
For a small addition to your normal premium (sometimes the cover is included free), you would be able to claim the costs of taking legal action if you were injured in an accident where someone else was at fault, or if you were unfairly sacked from your job, for example.
Although the cover is sold in addition to your home insurance, the legal action doesn’t have to be linked to your property.
You would also be protected in disputes relating to work around your home – for example if a tradesman had failed to deliver on his side of a contract or project.
You can also buy legal expenses cover on a motor insurance policy, but this is normally to deal with legal action related to your vehicle such as accidents in which you or a third party are injured.
There will be an upper limit on the amount you are allowed to claim on a legal expenses policy, typically something between £50,000 and £100,000.
Before you sign up, check your insurer’s exclusions and conditions – for example you will normally have to use a solicitor recommended by the policy provider.
