Confused.com Guide to Driving in Scandinavia

Getting Started

Hop on a ferry to Scandinavia and you’ll discover the sort of dreamy driving conditions normally seen only in TV ads. Thousands of miles of well-maintained roads almost entirely free of traffic will sweep you into dramatic unspoilt landscapes: mountains, fjords, dazzling beaches, rolling farmland and quaint villages.

Conditions are excellent: signposting is clear and drivers tend to be easy going and well mannered. Summer is the time to go, when the sun barely sets. Winter can be treacherous: darkness descends, conditions deteriorate quickly and studded tyres or snow chains become essential.

Throughout Scandinavia you should drive at all times with dipped headlights and carry a warning triangle. Watch out for traffic entering from the right – unless indicated otherwise, it has right of way. In an emergency dial 112.
