Research shows that Britons are failing to prepare for the oncoming winter weather, with just 20 per cent of road users taking the necessary precautions.

The Red Cross poll involving 2,000 people also found that less than 40 per cent have readied their home for any possible problems the cold weather might bring.

Following the severe wintry conditions last year, the voluntary organisation has put a fleet of vehicles on standby to help those trapped by snow or flood.

The move comes after Red Cross research showed that almost half of Britons had their Christmas marred by last year's severe weather.

Chief executive of the British Red Cross, Sir Nick Young, said: "Last Christmas many were caught on the hop by the extreme winter weather.

"None of us can predict what conditions will be like this year. But what we can all do is take a set of small, practical steps to ensure that we are prepared."

In a bid to combat the harsh climate, the British Red Cross has launched its Ready for Winter campaign, which lists a number of provisions that could prove essential for those trapped by the cold.

It urges people to take with them:

  • A list of emergency contact numbers
  • A battery operated torch and spare batteries
  • Any essential medication, some toiletries and a first aid kit
  • Three days' supply of bottled water and ready-to-eat foods that keep
  • Copies of important documents like insurance policies and birth certificates
