British Gas has promised to provide a more transparent billing system and to simplify energy tariffs.

Managing director Phil Bentley conceded that the massive energy supplier "had not made it easy" in the past, but this would change in a bid to improve things for customers.

As part of its new code of conduct, British Gas will deliver a variable and a fixed tariff, with all consumers being given a complete breakdown of all the costs included in their bills.

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Bentley said: "It's clear that we need to make things better for our customers. To make sure we do that, I'm committed to having an honest conversation with (them).

"We are very conscious of our social responsibility."

He also revealed that the supplier will no longer offer cheap deals as loss leaders to attract new customers.

"It's not right if we are charging honest customers more (to fund these deals)," he said.

Beat the price rises!

All of the Big 6 energy companies have hiked prices. Now all the price rises have been announced, switch to a fixed or capped deal to beat higher bills.
