If you're on a gas and electricity deal that is soon to expire, you can expect to be moved onto your supplier's standard tariff.

But these standard tariffs may well end up costing you more.

So now is the time to make sure you're on the best deal before the cold weather kicks in.

Gas & electricity best-buys

Kate Rose, head of gas and electricity at Confused.com, says even though winter is still some way off, Britain's householders should be paying attention to their gas and electricity bills.

"The weather, while warm now, will quickly turn cooler, and in a few weeks or sooner we are likely to be reaching for the thermostat.

"It typically takes around six weeks for a gas and electricity switch to be completed, so act now to make sure you're on a cheap deal before your energy use increases during winter.

"There are a number of ways to reduce your bills further.

"Fixed tariffs set prices for a period of time so protect you against future rises.

"Paying by monthly direct debit, managing your account online and opting for a dual fuel tariff – gas and electricity from the same supplier - are other useful ways to cut costs."

Have a look at our gas and electricity best buy table to find the latest deals.

How to search for the best gas & electricity deal

  • Log on to Confused.com's gas and electricity switching service. Enter your postcode and details of your current gas and electricity supplier, including the name of your tariff. You should be able to find the name on a bill but if not give your current supplier a call and ask. There are many tariffs so it pays to enter the correct one to ensure accurate price comparison.
  • Enter your annual spend on your bill, or your annual usage. For the most accurate price comparison, enter your usage. You can find this out by calling your current supplier and asking for your usage for the past 12 months, in kilowatt hours (kWh).
  • If you don't know your usage - if you've moved into a new property for example - you can enter details of the type of property you live in, along with the number of occupants. We use this to estimate your energy usage.
  • The search results will show you the cheapest deals for dual fuel (gas and electricity from the same supplier), as well as the cheapest deals for gas and electricity separately. It's worth checking out the cost of separate deals as while duel fuel is often cheaper, this is not always the case.
  • You are also able to enter how you'd like to pay your bill. It is almost always cheaper to pay by direct debit. If you pay by direct debit then your payment is guaranteed, unlike paying on receipt of bill. So suppliers are happy to offer discounts for customers who pay by this way.
