6 of the best road trip companions - and 3 of the worst

Driving solo is all well and good, but these road trip buddies take things to the next level.

Best and worst driving companions

The great British public have voted James Corden as their top driving companion, and it’s not hard to see why. He’s had to beat off some stiff competition, though. Here’s our pick of some of the most notable – and most infamous - carpool duos from the silver screen.

First, the best:

Jake and Elwood Blues - The Blues Brothers

Arguably the only pair who can drive 106 miles to Chicago, with a full tank of gas and half a pack of cigarettes, in the dark, while wearing sunglasses, and make it look cool.

A trip in the Bluesmobile comes with a cracking soundtrack that’ll make you want to shake a tail feather. On the flip side, there may be the odd car chase to content with.

Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar – Wayne’s World

Wayne’s World is as 90s as it gets – just look at the clothes, the slang, and the music.

But anyone who can belt out Bohemian Rhapsody in the car is okay in our books. Also, their synchronised head banging compels us to rock out with them.

Party on.

Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunn – Dumb and Dumber

They’re not be the sharpest tools in the shed. But Harry and Lloyd never disappoint when it comes to staving off boredom on a road trip.

If the Mutt Cutts van doesn’t fill you with joy, their rendition of Mockingbird definitely will.

Neal Page and Del Griffith – Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Are you looking for a memorable driving experience? Look no further than dour, put-upon Neal and bumbling optimist Del for a trip you’re not likely to forget in a hurry.

Just don’t trust Del behind the wheel – ever.

Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan – The Trip To Italy

Alan Partridge and Uncle Bryn trying to outdo one another with celebrity impressions – there’s no better way to spend a holiday.

We could listen to their banter for hours on end.

Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear – The Muppet Movie

Hitting the open road with a singing bear and a banjo-playing frog sounds like all kinds of fun. The constant singalongs and Fozzie’s “waka waka” may start to wear thin after a while, though.

And now for the worst:

Thelma and Louise - Thelma and Louise

Trouble seems to follow these two wherever they go, but you have to admire their strength of character – and their taste in cars.

What starts off as a fun weekend away quickly escalates and ends in (spoiler alert) a leap off the Grand Canyon. With that in mind, you may want to say no to this kind of road trip.

Tommy Callahan and Richard Hayden – Tommy Boy

Things tend to go from bad to worse when you put these two in a car together. Granted, they can belt out a few tunes, but their buffoonery is second-to-none.

Plus, you’ll likely get the blame for anything that happens to the car.

Harold Lee and Kumar Patel – Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle

Hijinks are the order of the day if you decide to hitch a ride with Harold and Kumar. Their simple goal of getting burgers is turned into an epic quest involving cheetahs, surgery and Neil Patrick Harris.

Though it’d be fun to tag along with their shenanigans, we wouldn’t recommend driving under the influence like they do.
