Last of big six energy companies drop prices, Comment from Gareth Kloet, Head of Utilities

Publication Date: Thursday, March 11, 2010

EDF Energy and Scottish Power join in the price cut bonanza announcing 4 and 8 percent cuts to their gas rates respectively.  Disappointingly, EDF Energy has opted for the 26th March with Scottish Power choosing month end.

This is yet another example of energy companies having a "spring sale", the equivalent of discounting winter clothing at the end of the season - too little too late.

With all of the big six now having shown their hand, it's hard to believe that these huge companies are able to advertise the fact that they are cutting prices, when they are failing to actually proceed with the cuts until sometime later - when it's likely to have less benefit to the customer.

Today's announcements put customers in control of their energy bills offering some respite after a particularly demanding winter on home energy.

With the end of March proving to be a critical time when it comes to price drops, we would encourage customers to read their meters to ensure they only pay for the energy that they have used and at the rates applicable.

Now with so many competitive prices out there, customers should shop around on sites such as Confused.com to ensure the tariffs they sign up for are the best deals available to them. Opting to take both gas and electricity with one supplier, paying by direct debit and going online for the best deals will yield the maximum savings. The savings that could be made this way are far more substantial than the small drops being announced today.
