Frequently Asked Questions

Motor Insurance - Occupation

I can't find my occupation!

Due to the sheer number of occupations, and the way different insurers handle them, it might be possible that your occupation is defined slightly differently. Try a few variations of your occupation for example if you're an IT Manager, try searching for 'Computer' or 'Manager' and then choose the relevant occupation from the list. If you decide to go ahead and buy a car insurance policy through Confused.com you could confirm your occupation details with your chosen insurer.

I work Part-time, but the site won't let me continue

If your part time occupation is where you spend most of your time (e.g. you're not studying etc) then enter this as your 'main occupation'. If you have more than one occupation then use the 'Other occupation' field.

I'm a student, what should I enter on the occupations page?

In the field 'employment status', select Full-Time Education (Student) and in the 'Main occupation' field enter 'Student' then click 'Next'. On the following screen you can then select what type of student you are from the options.

Motor Insurance - Claims

The site is asking me for Claim details but I don't have any!

The claims page will only appear if you have answered on the 'Your details' page that you have made a claim or had an accident on your policy in the last 5 years. If you have not made any claims, you can click the 'previous' button and change the answer to the question 'Accidents or losses in the last 5 years (regardless of fault or blame)' to '0' and then continue with your quote.

I don't know the exact cost of the claim

If a claim has been made or reported, the cost of the claim entered must be more than £100 (a requirement of the insurers we visit). When putting in the cost of the claim, enter whole pounds (no pence) e.g. £243.29 should be entered as 243 and £3,456.56 should be entered as 3456

How can I determine the fault of a claim?

Any accident, loss or claim that has been reported to your insurer within the last 5 years, or has been made against you by a third party insurer, needs to be included in the quote (regardless of fault). When the details of the claim are entered you will get the option to advise us whether it was a fault or non-fault claim. As a general rule a claim is considered non-fault only when you receive all your costs and excesses back from your insurer.

What happens if you feel the claim was not your fault, but you didn't receive all your costs back

In some circumstances the insurance companies involved in a claim, may split the responsibility of a claim. This may mean a proportion of the claim is attributed to each party. In this circumstance you will need to state that the claim was a 'Driver at Fault' claim.

Motor Insurance - Convictions

The site is asking me for details of Convictions but I don't have any!

The Convictions page will only appear if you have answered on the 'Your details' page that you have had a motoring conviction in the last 5 years. If you don't have any motoring convictions, pending or otherwise on your licence, you can click the 'previous' button and change the answer to the question 'no. of motoring offences in the last 5 years' to '0' and then continue with your quote.

I am unable to enter my conviction details

If for example you received 3 points and a £60 fine for speeding on a public road (SP30) back on the 11.06.2003, the details should be entered as follows:

  • 11 June 03 should be entered as 11 06 2005
  • Fine amounts should be entered as 60 and not 60.00
  • Points should be entered as 03
  • Your conviction code should be selected from the drop down list.
  • 11 June 03 should be entered as 11 06 2005
  • Fine amounts should be entered as 60 and not 60.00
  • Your conviction code should be selected from the drop down list.

What if I have an automatic ban?

If you have received an automatic ban, you will need to include the number of points you were given e.g. 12 points (assuming you had no points previously) and the length of the ban. If you are unable to complete these fields, it is unlikely that we will be able to quote for your details at this time.

Motor Insurance - Vehicle Details

How can I get cover for my bike, van or campervan?

On the Confused.com home page there is a link to Van insurance; Motorbike insurance can be found within the 'other' option on the Confused.com homepage (under the heading 'Insurance'). At the moment we do not provide quotes for campervan insurance, but please try us again as we are constantly seeking to offer more products to our customers.

Imported Vehicles

Your vehicle registration document will tell you if your vehicle is an import. If your car has been registered from new in the UK, this would not be classed as an import.

Why can't I find my vehicle?

While we source car registration details from a DVLA provider these might not always be 100% accurate as it can depend on when the system has updated to include brand new cars. After entering your registration number if your car details are not displayed correctly, you can click 'previous' and either amend your registration details or enter the make of the car. It might help having your vehicle registration documents to hand to make sure you have the right engine size and year of manufacture (as this isn't always the year of registration).
