Young drivers 'racing sat-navs'

Over half of the UK's young drivers have tried to beat an estimated journey time set by their satnav, according to the latest research.

The results of an AA/Populus survey show that satnavs are used by around three quarters of drivers aged between 18 and 24, however, 55 per cent foolishly decide to 'race' their predicted journey times.

Meanwhile, of the 25 to 34 year-olds who use satnavs, around a third report that they too sometimes try to beat times set by their equipment.

Young drivers in Yorkshire and Humberside have the highest rate of satnav ownership, at 58 per cent. Some 18 per cent of these motorists have chosen to race their devices.

In contrast, Scotland is the UK region where young drivers possess the lowest number of satnavs.
