From next year, new MoT rules could force UK drivers to pay for electronic stability control (ESC) system repairs, it is believed.

Reports have highlighted that the Department for Transport's road worthiness test will also feature electric seat adjustment motors and factory-fitted tyre pressure monitoring systems, as result of new regulations from the EU.

ESC systems within vehicles will need to be in working order from 2012, once the new MoT rules come into force.

From the start of November next year, these systems will become a mandatory feature of new cars.

Commenting on the issue, Julie Sinclair, Auto Express news and features editor, stated: "It's about time the MoT got tougher.

"But repair costs for these important safety features need to come down or we'll end up with a nation divided by those motorists than can afford to be safe on the road and those that can't."
