Traffic experts have warned that London roads could suffer as the opening of the Olympics clashes with people heading off on holiday.

Inrix claimed the two factors could create the "perfect traffic storm" as it suggested that London roads will see a third more congestion during the Games.

Its figures indicated that the opening three days of the Olympics would cause the biggest headache for motorists.

The report claimed that during late July and early August, main route traffic will crawl at barely more than 10mph.

But Transport for London responded to the claims, suggesting the information they were based on was "out of date" and "incorrect".

Inrix said the men's road cycling event, which gets under way soon after the opening, will lead to "thousands" of road closures.
