Congestion during the August bank holiday weekend is likely to cause delays for 20% of road journeys, new research indicates.

According to Trafficmaster, last-minute decisions to travel away from home could lead to very unpredictable traffic conditions at the end of the month.

Compared to normal weekends, the days that make up the extended weekend are likely to see two to four hour increases in congestion peaks

Among the sites where congestion may be an issue this bank holiday weekend, the company noted that sections of the M25 and the M5 southbound to the West Country could prove to be very busy.

Commenting on her organisation's latest predictions, a spokesperson for Trafficmaster said: "With the ongoing troubled economic situation and people wary about spending money, we are predicting many motorists will make a last-minute decision about getting away for the August bank holiday weekend."
