The number of UK-built cars rose by 5.8 per cent last year to more than 1.3 million - growth which was driven by record exports, figures showed.
Engine production was also on the rise, and increased by 4.9 per cent to 2.5 million, even though there was a "modest" decrease in December, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said.
Paul Everitt, chief executive, said: "UK vehicle and engine production continues to lead the manufacturing recovery, with increased output and exports taking a record-breaking share.
"In 2011, vehicle manufacturers renewed their commitment to the UK, securing new model programmes, facilities and jobs for the long term.
"It is essential that industry and Government continue to work in partnership to maximise the opportunities at all levels of the UK supply chain and encourage more investment in research and development, skills and new plant and machinery."
In total, 1,343,819 cars were built in 2011, 1,124,676 of which were for export - which makes up 83 per cent of the total.
Some 219,134 of the vehicles were built for the home market.
The SMMT said exports increased by 17 per cent over the 12 months, but production for UK sales dropped 29 per cent.
