Motorists are being reminded of the savings they can make by adopting small changes to their driving technique as the summer holidays get underway.
Transport Minister Norman Baker said drivers could reduce their fuel bills by 8 per cent by simply de-cluttering their car, driving smoothly and changing gears at the right time.
Other tips to make the pounds go further on this summer's trips include ensuring the correct tyre pressures, keeping a check on your speed and considering the weight added to the vehicle with roof racks and boxes.
And it always pays to look well ahead to avoid unnecessary braking and acceleration.
Mr Baker said: "For many families, the annual holiday will be the longest trip they make all year.
"Applying the simple smarter driving techniques could make a real difference to fuel costs.
"In a single 500 mile trip, you could save £10 - certainly enough for a few extra ice creams to keep the kids happy."
