Members of the public will be able to see how effective speed cameras are in England as data showing vehicle speeds and accident and casualty rates are published online.
The Department for Transport is posting links to the statistics provided by local authorities on its website, although residents in some areas will have to wait longer to see the data than others as some councils have not yet published any information.
The data show how many accidents and speeding incidents there were both before and after the cameras were put in place. A total of 75 local authorities have published at least some of these data so far.
Police forces will also soon be publishing data relating to how many prosecutions have been made as a result of each permanent or long-term temporary fixed camera site in their area each year. It will also make available the total number of offences recorded by all cameras and how many offenders received a fixed penalty notice, were taken to court or chose to complete speed awareness courses.
Road safety minister Mike Penning said: "I hope that this information will help local people to make informed judgments about the impact cameras are having on their local roads."
