An England rugby player received a £3,000 fine and a 16 month road ban after admitting drink-driving on New Year's Day.

Danny Care, 25, was excluded from the Six Nations squad after the incident in which he was stopped at the Winchester services on the M3 early in the morning, Southampton Magistrates' Court heard.

Police had previously fined the Harlequins scrum-half for being drunk and disorderly three weeks beforehand. He was shown in a breath test to have 77mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath - the legal limit is 35mg.

Care was ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a £15 victim surcharge fee in addition to the fine.

Just hours before being arrested he had tweeted: "2012 is hopefully going to be a massive year... Earn respect. Earn the shirt. Set the example."
