Forty-five years on and it's still service with a smile from Jim Haggart, the AA's longest serving patrolman in the UK.

Since joining the organisation back in 1966, Mr Haggart has helped some 80,000 stranded motorists.

The 60-year-old estimates that he helps up to 2,000 drivers a year get back on the road.

And it isn't the end of the road for the patrolman yet. Mr Haggart said he still enjoys helping motorists out.

"If I do on average maybe eight jobs a shift, I get to help eight different people with their particular problem, which is nice," he said.

"It's nice to be able to get a car going and see the satisfaction on people's faces when they drive away."

And he has no qualms about telling people how long he has worked for the motoring organisation when they ask.

He added: " To me it's just a number, I enjoy the job and the years just go by. but it's the reaction on people's faces, when I tell them 45 years.

"They either look at you as if 'well done' or as if 'you're absolutely mad'."
