MoT tests for cars in the UK will include some extra checks from next year.

Some sections of vehicles already currently checked will also be examined in new ways, including lights, suspension, brakes and steering. The change is to bring the country into line with European rules and adapt the test to look at newer technology used in cars.

Taking effect on January 1, the changes mean electronic safety devices in vehicles will be looked at, including stability control. However, a car failing the new tests will not fail the MoT until later in 2012 so garages and motorists can prepare for the new system.

The MoT system is looked after by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency. Its chief executive Alastair Peoples said it "is designed to make sure that a vehicle is fit to be on the road" and so must be "updated to reflect new vehicle technology".

"We have worked with the industry to prepare them for these changes to make sure that the measures are introduced in the least burdensome way possible," he said.
