Around 25 per cent of motorists are struggling to cope with the costs of running a car, according to research.

The Driver Satisfaction Index by Motors.co.uk revealed that fuel and car insurance prices are the biggest causes of concern among most drivers across the UK.

The YouGov survey, commissioned by the car search website, found that fuel prices are worrying 82 per cent of motorists, while 38 per cent are most worried about car insurance and 19 per cent are not satisfied with the quality of roads in their area.

A total of 2,000 people were questioned for the survey, which also highlighted that a quarter of drivers are planning to cut down on fuel expenditure and 12 per cent are using public transport more to save cash.

Phill Jones, commercial director of Motors.co.uk, said: "The evidence is clearly there to suggest that blithely resorting to a temporary freeze in fuel duty is simply not enough."
