A mobile app has been created by Volvo to allow motorists to keep an eye on their parked car remotely, using their iPhone or Android smart phone.

Volvo owners will be able to use the app to control and monitor their vehicle no matter where they are and at any time of the day or night.

The car manufacturer has introduced the app for drivers who use its Volvo On Call service, which provides direct access to a call centre if they are involved in an accident or other kind of emergency.

The app alerts drivers when their car alarm is triggered and also features a car locator and digital compass that points the driver in the direction of their vehicle.

If necessary, the car horn and indicators can be activated to help with the search while the app includes a remote door lock showing the status of all doors and windows. This means drivers can lock and unlock their car using the touch screen.

All Volvo owners with 2012 models who have Volvo On Call will be able to download the app for free.
