Drivers might be worried about petrol prices and car insurance costs, but depreciation is what really hurts their bank balance in the long run.

Industry expert CAP has revealed the top 10 vehicles that retain the most value after a period of three years and 37,000 miles from new.

Toyota Landcruiser 3.0D-4D Invincible finished top of the pile, with its reliability and general toughness helping it to keep 72.2 per cent of its value over three years.

SUVs completed the top five alongside the Landcruiser, with the Ford Kuga 2.0, the Audi Q5 2.0 TDI and Porsche Cayenne all retaining 70 per cent of their value. The Volvo XC60 finished fifth with 68%.

A total of seven out of the top 10 are diesels, with most of them being larger premium models, indicating that the migration to smaller and more fuel efficient cars has not taken hold yet.

In sixth and seventh, the Fiat 500 1.2 and Suzuki Jimny kept 67.6 per cent and 66.3 per cent of their value respectively.

Meanwhile, the Volkswagen Scirocco 2.0 TDI fnished eighth and the Alfa Romeo Mito 1.4 is tied for ninth place with the Volkswagen Golf GT 2.0 TDI.
