Jaguar has had to recall nearly 18,000 cars because of a problem with their cruise control function.

The fault applies to diesel X-type cars built in the UK between 2006 and 2010.

The firm said "in some circumstances the cruise control may not respond to normal inputs".

Customers were sent a letter explaining that they may not be able to disengage the system in the usual manner, under some circumstances.

However, turning off the ignition will cancel the car's cruise control, the letter said.

Jaguar said 17,678 cars in the UK have the fault. A spokesman for the firm said: "This potential problem was spotted by one of our employees. No customer has been affected and there had been no accidents or injuries."
