Insurance premiums could jump by 25 per cent after incurring a single three-point penalty for speeding, a study shows.
A three-point conviction could see male drivers paying an extra £85, or 14 per cent, for their premiums, research of 10 leading insurers by RoadPilot found.
Female motorists see a slightly smaller 13 per cent average rise or a £69 a year increase.
However, premiums could soar by around £158 or 24 per cent in individual cases, it found.
And the conviction could end up costing motorists up to £692 as they are obliged to declare it to insurers for the four years that it remains on their licence.
The four-year period could also end up costing female drivers an extra £276, the study shows.
James Flynn OBE, CEO of RoadPilot, said: "A £60 fine for speeding is hard enough to swallow, but many people don't realise the significant hidden cost of being caught by a roadside camera.
"Drivers also need to remember that endorsement points stay on their licence for a long time, hitting their pockets year after year through higher insurance premiums."
