People suffering from a serious cold or flu are being warned that their illness could seriously impair their driving ability and they could even face police prosecution.
Scientific tests carried out by safety experts show people suffering from a cold had reduced reaction times and sudden braking increased because the driver was less aware of traffic around their vehicle.
The study was commissioned by Halfords. It also found that taking corners become more erratic and overall driving ability dropped by over 50% - which is the same as driving after downing over four double whiskies.
Halfords winter driving expert Mark Dolphin said: "We want our customers to stay safe. You shouldn't drive if you are not feeling well. The best place to be when you have flu or a heavy cold is at home, but if you really must go out, get someone else to take you and avoid driving."
Police have also warned people that those who are in control of a car while suffering from a heavy cold could be charged.
