Motorists are being advised to take care on the roads as scattered snow showers and freezing temperatures in parts of the UK could lead to icy conditions.

The Met Office's cold weather alert has been raised to Level 3 and it has warned that the probability of "severe" conditions across most of England this week is 100 per cent.

Temperatures will be at their lowest on Wednesday and Thursday, with Met Office forecasts suggesting that they will drop to lows of -6C (21.2F), with maximum daytime temperatures set to be no higher than 3C (37.4F).

Drivers in the East of England and Scotland, Northern Ireland, south-west England and south Wales have been advised to take particular caution as the Met Office has issued severe weather warnings to these parts of the country.

Clare Allen, forecaster with MeteoGroup, the Press Association's weather division, said: "We've got an easterly wind across the country bringing snow showers off the North Sea. If people aren't careful driving then it could cause disruption. Anywhere that is wet, ice is expected to form."
