Nearly half of UK car owners feel a sense of ownership about the parking space closest to their home, new research indicates.
Of those polled in a survey from Churchill, 44 per cent feel they rightfully possess the public parking spot located outside their property.
Meanwhile, 18 per cent of respondents actually feel distress when someone else decides to take their traditional spot.
Extreme measures have been adopted by some drivers in order to make sure their parking space is not used by another vehicle owner.
For instance, the poll found that 5 per cent have blocked a space with road signs, cones or even their own car to preserve it for themselves.
Tony Chilcott, head of Churchill car insurance, said: "Parking issues can lead to heated arguments but people need to be tolerant of drivers that are parking entirely legally, even if it is directly outside their property."
