Taking another driving test would be a daunting prospect for many motorists, with quite a few not confident they would pass, a survey has found.

The breakdown service Autonational Rescue found 13 per cent of drivers believe they would fail and 3 per cent thought they would do so by a long way.

Some 40 per cent said they thought they would come out with a narrow pass and 36 per cent expected to pass easily, the poll of 1,500 motorists revealed.

About 30 per cent of those asked said they would have difficulty passing the theory test and a number of others said the parking skills now necessary would be daunting.

More than one driver in five said nerves would be a significant issue if they had to do the test again now.

But 22 per cent felt confident they would breeze through the test without a problem.

Autonational Rescue marketing manager Ronan Hart said: "There was one big surprise in this survey - that fewer than 0.5 per cent thought they would struggle with an emergency stop, which is a great relief from the road safety viewpoint."
