Motorists behind the wheels of company cars tend to drive "less safely" than other road users, the House of Lords has heard.

Former Labour transport spokesman Lord Berkeley brought up the topic during question time and received support from Government transport spokesman Earl Attlee.

Lord Berkeley said: "Company car drivers tend to not only drive further but drive faster and less safely than people who own their own cars. Isn't there something the Government could look at there?"

Lord Attlee responded by saying he was correct and that he had already been trying to find out if anything can be done about the matter,

"I suspect the reason why the accident rate is higher for company cars is because company car drivers are working under increased pressure and can be tireder, which is a well-known cause of accidents on the strategic road network," he said.
