Green driving has surged past a new milestone after Austrian economy motoring specialist Gerhard Plattner drove 1,246 miles on one 45-litre tank of fuel.

Plattner, who travelled in a Skoda Fabia GreenLine, drove from Reutte, Austria, to Bov in Denmark, and back again - a record low of 127.8 miles-per-gallon. He used Germany's longest motorway, the A7, for his trip.

The International Police Motor Corporation supervised the journey, sealing the fuel tank before Plattner set off.

The driver said: "The Skoda GreenLine models are perfect for fuel-efficient driving. In light of the current fuel prices not only is that important for one's own wallet, but also for lowering environmental pollution.

With a fuel consumption well below the specified norm I want to show that besides the car manufacturers, every driver can contribute to further reduce this environmental pollution."

With green driving coming more and more into the public sphere, it certainly pays to buy and insure more environmentally sound - and economical - vehicles.
