Buying a used car could turn into a nightmare this Halloween unless customers are on their guard against dodgy dealers, experts have warned.

Vehicle checking company HPI is offering a discount for the rest of the month to help car buyers avoid getting spooked.

The group says one in three of the cars brought into its centres has a history which has not been disclosed by the seller.

Popular scams used by unscrupulous dealers include clocking, where the mileage on a car is pushed back so that the vehicle can be sold for a higher price.

HPI spokeswoman Nicola Johnson said: "Used car fraudsters have more tricks than treats up their sleeves, leaving consumers at risk of paying over the odds for a car that could be stolen or cloned or could still be on outstanding finance.

"This means buyers stand to lose the car and the money they paid for it when it's returned to its rightful owner."

In a bid to help used car buyers ensure that they are getting a good deal, HPI is offering 30 per cent off its checks until October 31.
