One of Europe's leading car crash test bodies has revealed its shortlist of safest new cars of 2010.

The winner of the Euro NCAP executive car section was the latest BMW 5 Series, which scored five stars in the tests, a return to form after the previous model was marked at four points.

Alfa Romeo's sporty Alfa Giulietta was named as the safest family hatchback, with the Kia Sportage leading the way in its field.

There was double joy for Japanese makers with the Toyota Verso and Honda CR-Z also proving to be best in class.

Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP secretary general, said: "The presence in these categories of high-performing five star cars demonstrates car manufacturers' commitment to safety for all sizes of vehicles."
