One of the UK's biggest supermarkets has slashed its petrol prices by up to 2p a litre.

Asda said drivers filling up on its forecourts will now pay no more than 130.7p a litre for petrol, thanks to the drop in wholesale fuel prices.

The chain has also reduced its diesel prices to no more than 135.7p a litre.

The news will be welcomed by motorists who have seen the cost of fuel soar in recent months.

It comes after rival supermarket Tesco sparked a price war by cutting the cost of 3,000 products in a £500 million campaign.

Andy Peake, Asda petrol trading director, said: "We know the price of petrol matters to our customers, which is why we aim to be the first to pass on cuts in the cost of crude."
