Motorists are failing to abide by the 'clunk click, every trip' message with many still refusing to belt up before hitting the roads.

An AA survey involving more than 40,000 vehicles found that almost 5 per cent of drivers are not wearing seatbelts.

The worst offenders are in the West Midlands, where 7.43 per cent of motorists had not strapped in before starting their journey. Neighbours in the East Midlands are the best at observing seatbelt regulations, with only 3.48 per cent not properly secured in the study.

The AA, which used volunteer "streetwatchers" to conduct the survey, warned motorists to abide by the seatbelt rules as failure to do so is contributing to 30 per cent of road deaths.

The survey also revealed that a third of motorists are not indicating, a tenth of motorists are going too fast, 3.6 per cent have faulty brake lights and 0.23 per cent are using mobile phones while driving.
