More than 10,000 UK motorists are driving legally despite incurring 12 or more penalty points on their licence, research has revealed.

A freedom of information request by LV= car insurance also discovered that more than a fifth (2,167) of these drivers have notched up 13 or more penalty points but have not been given a ban.

According to the research, Lancashire, London, Croydon, Leicestershire, Swansea and Cheshire are particular hotspots for drivers with 12 or more penalty points on the licence.

The freedom of information request also unveiled that four drivers in Britain have 30 points to their name.

LV= also discovered that 3,823,544 drivers in the UK have penalty points on their licence, the majority of which have been reprimanded for speeding offences.
