Ford Galaxy car insurance

Now in its third generation, the Galaxy is undeniably popular throughout the UK and has even gone on to inspire other Ford Models like the S-Max. This spacious MPV combines advanced technology and elegant design with safety resulting in a smooth school run and relieving the stress of a big family holiday.

Due to the nature and size of the car, the Galaxy could be expensive to repair. A newer Galaxy could also set you back a bit, so, if you're looking at saving some pounds and need a people carrier you could do a lot worse than picking up an older and used Galaxy. However, pick up an older model with a poor service history and you could be in trouble. Make sure you check out our second hand car insurance guide for tips on buying one.

The table below gives you an idea of where some of the Galaxy models fall in regard to their typical insurance groups and tax bracket ranges in regard to their engine sizes.

Ford Galaxy models Engine size (litres) Typical insurance group Tax bracket range
LX 1.8 - 2.3 16 - 26 H - L
Silver 1.6 - 2.3 23 - 26 I - K
Zetec 1.6 - 2.3 16 - 26 I - K
Ghia 1.8 - 2.8 17 - 31 G - L
Ghia Elegance 1.9 26 I
Edge 1.8 - 2.0 16 - 20 E - L
Titanium 1.6 - 2.2 17 - 26 E - J
Titanium X 1.3 - 2.2 18 - 27 E - J

Like many of Ford's models, the Galaxy gives you plenty of choice in regard to engine size and trims. Typically, the smaller the engine the lower the insurance group, so, if you're on a tighter budget, the 1.3 Titanium X could be a better option to go for in comparison to the gutsier Galaxy 3.1 Ghia.

Ford Galaxy: The facts

  • Manufactured: 1995 - present
  • Class: Large MPV
  • Related cars: Volkswagen Sharan and SEAT Alhambra

Being Ford's top end, and biggest, MPV, the Galaxy has a lot to live up to, which it certainly does. When reviewed by What Car?, it was given 4 out of 5 stars as well as being named MPV of the Year by Professional Driver Magazine in 2012.

As a joint venture between Ford and the Volkswagen Group, the early Galaxy models could be seen as VW designs with a Ford badge attached. The year 2000 saw a major redesign take place resulting in the Galaxy beginning to distance itself from VW. However, it wasn't until 2006, when the third generation model went on sale, that the Galaxy became a four pillar vehicle of Ford design with not a VW part in sight.

As you would expect from a car designed with families in mind, Ford incorporated a lot of safety measures. When Euro NCAP put these to the test, the Galaxy performed highly and scored a maximum 5 star safety result.

Not only is it more fun to drive than most MPVs, according to What Car?, it also offers a lot of space. With all the middle and back tier seats folded down, you get 2,325 litres of capacity - now that's a lot of luggage or shopping!
