Whether you're a new driver or an experienced motorist looking to brush up on your motoring skills, a free course could help you become better behind the wheel.
When someone has recently passed their test taking more lessons is often the last thing on their mind.
But studies have shown that this is the group most likely to have accidents due to inexperience and, in the case of some younger drivers, overconfidence.
So extra guidance at this stage can prove invaluable – and save lives.
Equally, motorists who passed their test years ago can become rusty in some areas.
Keeping your driving skills up-to-date will help keep you safe on the roads and also save you money - as even a small bump with another car can drive future motor insurance costs up.
Free refresher course
The AA Charitable Trust for Road Safety and the Environment is giving away 2,000 free two-hour courses - Drive Confident for experienced motorists and Drive Smart course for new drivers.
Both courses are available across England, Wales and Scotland.
Drive Confident
These courses are for qualified drivers who lack confidence in some area of driving or want refresher training.
The in-car sessions include an initial assessment followed by guided practice.
You'll receive two hours free tuition. You can do one two-hour slot or two one-hour slots in your own car or an AA vehicle.
And there's no test to sit at the end - the sessions are simply to help you become a more confident driver. You can apply online here.
"I passed my test 30 years ago"
Sue Cooper, aged 64, from Southampton, sat the Drive Confident course.
She says: "I passed my test 30 years ago but then had to stop driving for two years due to ill-health.
"When I was able to drive again I found my confidence had gone and that I was afraid of handling motorways and roundabouts.
"My instructor was very calm, and knowing she had dual controls meant I could relax and concentrate on the road.
"With her guidance I was surprised at how quickly my skills returned. I've been practising and am now happy to drive to visit family and friends."
AA Drive Smart Course
Motorists who have passed their test in the past 12 months and have had an accident or received licence penalty points during that time can apply for two hours free tuition on the AA's Drive Smart course.
It consists of two one-hour sessions with an AA driving instructor where pupils are taught how to improve their driving skills and become safer and fuel-efficient drivers.
You do have to do some home study before the in-car sessions and students are also asked to practice between sessions to make the most of the training. You can apply online here.
Edmund King, AA president, said: “Our research shows that millions of qualified drivers think they lack the ability to pass a driving re-test, so we are really pleased to be able to offer these courses to them to help overcome their driving issues."
