Car review: Hyundai ix35

The old ix35 was one of the fastest-selling models in Hyundai’s product range and the fresh shape looks set to continue this trend, writes car reviewer Tim Barnes-Clay.

Hyundai ix35

Established in 1967, Hyundai Motor Co. has grown into the Hyundai Motor Group, with more than two dozen auto-related subsidiaries and affiliates.

Hyundai Motor - which has seven manufacturing bases outside of South Korea including Brazil, China, the Czech Republic, India, Russia, Turkey and the U.S. - sold 4.4 million vehicles globally in 2012.

What's more, Hyundai is the first Korean car manufacturer to make it into the top 10 best-selling manufacturers in the United Kingdom.

Stylish, practical & safe

The new ix35, which went on sale at the end of last year, offers a stylish, practical and safe drive that is equally at home zipping about the city as it is out of it.

The compact Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) features a number of standard equipment upgrades over the old ix35 - and trim levels have been realigned.

A major change to the engine line-up includes the introduction of a six-speed automatic transmission on the range-topping 2.0-litre 136PS 4WD model, on test here.

This brings benefits of improved fuel consumption (41.5mpg combined versus 39.3mpg combined previously) and lower CO2 (179g/km versus the old figure of 189g/km).

2,000kg towing capacity

Hyundai certainly seems to have ensured that the New ix35 delivers true value.

Features include light-emitting diode (LED) daytime running lights and LED positioning lights (like on the New Generation Santa Fe).

The car also includes a tyre pressure monitoring system and trailer stability assist – a useful slice of technology to harness if you’re into towing.

Indeed Hyundai was the official partner of The Motorhome and Caravan Show recently because of the ix35’s load lugging talents.

The car has a braked towing capacity of up to 2,000kg, making it perfect for hauling anything from a caravan to a horse box.

State-of-the-art satellite navigation

Hyundai ix35 interior

On the outside, my test car benefitted from 18-inch alloys, chrome door handles and headlamp washers.

The flagship version has keyless entry and, inside, an upgraded audio and navigation system.

The state-of-the-art satellite navigation is accessed through a large, clear touch screen with a clever rear view camera to make parking in tricky spaces easy.

Leather seats, privacy glass and an electric tilt and slide panoramic sunroof confirm the ix35’s premium pretensions.

It’s not perfect though. The cabin, which will seat five-up, does have a few disappointingly cheap plastics scattered around – none of which you’d find in, say, an upmarket German SUV.

Five years unlimited mileage warranty

The boot is a good, square shape, making loading easy, and enhancements to the ix35’s chassis and suspension set-up means ride comfort and handling is excellent.

There is very little body lean and, although the vehicle doesn’t exactly fly off the mark, it’s powerful enough for effortless commuting.

As with all Hyundai’s passenger cars, the New ix35 is backed by the brand’s industry leading five Year Triple Care assurance package.

This offers among the best warranty cover in the industry as judged by Auto Express magazine.

This includes five years unlimited mileage warranty, five years free roadside assistance and five years of annual vehicle health checks, which gives much needed peace of mind motoring.
