Tyre covers combat icy conditions

As freezing temperatures and snowfall grip the UK, drivers are being warned to make sure their vehicle is kitted out for the hazardous conditions - and Vauxhall may have the accessory you're looking for.

In an bid to avoid skidding in icy conditions and claiming on your car insurance for knocks and bumps, it may be worthwhile investing in a set of "snow socks".

The fabric tyre covers, which simply slip over the wheels, provide extra grip in slippery situations, with the fibres arranged at right angles in the direction of travel.

Vauxhall says they are easier to use than snow chains and are more effective than winter tyres over snow and ice.

During the cold snap in December 2009 and January this year, much of the £395 million paid out was due to snow and ice-related incident, the Association of British Insurers said.

A set of two snow socks is available from Vauxhall retailers from £49.99, and are suitable to use on all car makes and models.
