Drivers Warned Over Car Security

A recent increase in goods being stolen from inside vehicles has compelled the Bedfordshire Police to issue a warning to drivers.

The Castle Road area in Bedford has seen a rising number of motorists heading back to their cars and discovering that their belongings have been taken by thieves.

Though the road users said they locked their doors before heading out, the police have urged that all drivers should ensure their vehicles are completely secure.

Measures such as locking doors, shutting windows and sunroofs - and physically checking that they are all shut - could make it difficult for thieves to pilfer anything from inside the car. Also, if drivers have alarms fitted in to their cars, they should make sure to use them, as they make it easier to spot anyone tampering with vehicles. Parking in the right place, where it is well lit even during late hours of the day, may also deter robbers.

It is exceptionally important for drivers to know what they should not put into the vehicle. Bank cards, mobile phones and sat navs should not be left in the car. They do not belong in the boot either - where pilferers may have spotted them being put in.

Opting for the right level of car insurance could also be a good way for road users to ensure they are covered if their car is somehow damaged during a burglary.

Peter Spicer, Officer PC, Crime Reduction said: "Motorists should lock their car when they are close to it, look out for the hazard lights activating and listen for the distinctive sound of the locks applying. Take the time to try the door handle just to make sure and, of course, never leave anything tempting on view in the car."
