50% of the Nation do not like to talk about money

New research released today by Saga Personal Finance shows that 50% of people do not like to talk about money because they believe such things should remain private.

The study of 2,032 people also discovered that 21% of under 50's are happy to talk about their finances in public in comparison to 14% of the over 50's. Surprisingly, men were 60% more likely to discuss their finances more openly than women.

The study found that the top five most discussed financial issues were:

  • Who you bank with (60%)
  • Whether or not you had a pension (38%)
  • Type of bank account you had (37%)
  • Type of mortgage you had (29%)
  • How much your house was worth (26%)

A spokesman for the company said that it was useful to talk to others about finance, but there was no substitute for professional advice, as everyone's financial needs are different.
